Dr. Vaibhav Kumar Singh, Scientist (Sr. Scale), Division of Plant Pathology, ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Pusa, New Delhi was born in a farmer’s family in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh on 10 th July, 1984. He has completed his B.Sc. (Agric.) degree from DDU University, Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh in 2003; M.Sc. (Agric.) degree in Plant Pathology from C.S. Azad University of Agriculture & Technology, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh in 2005 and Doctorate in Plant Pathology from G.B. Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, Pantnagar, Uttarakhand in 2008.
Dr. Singh has made outstanding
contribution in the field of wheat pathology and genetics under wheat
improvement & pathology programme by characterizing a number of rust
resistance wheat genotypes and developing high yielding durable rust resistant
& quality wheat varieties, which have been widely accepted by the
farmers. Moreover, he is doing outstanding work for adult plant resistance in
wheat. Besides, he is working on defense mechanisms underlying wheat and rusts pathogenesis
and genetics of rust resistance in wheat. Wheat varieties viz., HD 3118 (Pusa Vatsala),
HI 8737 (Pusa Anmol), HS 562, HD 4728, HD 3171, HI 1605 (Pusa Ujala), HI 8759 (Pusa
Tejas), HI 1612, HI 8777, HD 3237, HI 1620, HD 3226, HI 1621, HI 1628, HI 8802,
HI 8805, HD 3271 and HD 3249 needs special mention for his research
contribution, which helps in improving the production of wheat in different
parts of India.
His contribution to research has won him national awards like ‘Nanaji Deshmukh ICAR Outstanding Team Award’. He has also received several prestigious awards including Outstanding Scientist Award, Young Educator Award, Young Scientist Award, Dr RS Paroda Medal Award, Rashtriya Gaurav Puraskaar, Krishak Mitra Samman. He has been conferred with the Fellow of Andaman Sciences Academy. He has published more than 40 research articles in the international and national journals of repute, 40 popular articles and manuals to his credit besides many chapters in different books. He has written four books and handled 5 research projects financed by ICAR-NFAS, ICAR-AMAAS, NFSM-DAC, MoA&FW and DBT. He has guided 2 MSc students. Dr. Singh has delivered more than 10 invited lectures on wheat crop improvement and protection at various national and international fora.
