Born in Andhyari, Rajasthan, India on 7 September 1940. Educated at Secondary School, Uchain, Rajasthan, 1944-52; B.R. College, Agra, 1953-60; Timiryazev Agricultural Academy, Moscow, USSR, 1962-65; B.Sc. 1958; M.Sc. 1960; Ph.D. 1965.

Head, Division of Genetics, 1990-93 and 1998-2000 and Emeritus Scientist, 2000-2005, Division of Genetics, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi.

Awards/Honours: Prize of Bharatiya Vigyan Patrika Samiti, New Delhi, 1972; IARI Best Teacher Award, 1997; Hari Om Ashram Award, 1997-98; N.I. Vavilov Medal, USSR Academy of Sciences, Moscow; IARI Certificate of Appreciation for Developing Variety 2001-02 and 2006.
