SHARMA DR AKHILESH

Born at village Rait, in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh on 10th
March 1970, Dr. Akhilesh Sharma did matriculation from Government Higher Secondary School, Rait in 1985. He
obtained his B.Sc. (Ag.), M.Sc. and Ph. D.
degrees in Vegetable Science from CS K Himachal Pradesh Krishi
Vishvavidyalaya, (CSKHPKV) Palampur in 1990, 1992 and 1995, respectively. Dr. Sharma also qualified ARS/ICAR-NET in
1996.
Dr. Akhilesh Sharma started his professional career as Assistant Extension Specialist at KVK, Hamirpur at Bara, HP (1996-2000); Assistant Scientist at High Land Agricultural Research & Extension Centre, CSKHPKV, Kukumseri, Lahual & Spiti from 2000-2004; Department of Vegetable Science & Floriculture, CSKHPKV Palampur in 2004 as Assistant Professor, and subsequently became Associate Professor and Professor. During 2018-2021, he served as the Head of Department. Presently, he is serving as Principal Scientist in the department.
Dr. Sharma is recipient of various awards honours which include- Certificate of Merit in Matriculation; Merit Scholarship in M.Sc. and Ph.D.; Certificates of Honour in both M.Sc. and Ph. D.; Fellows of Indian Academy of Horticultural Sciences 2019, Indian Society of Vegetable Science 2016 and Society of Innovative Educationalist & Scientific Research Professional (SIESRP) 2020; Achiever Award 2019 by Society for Advancement of Human and Nature; Innovative Research & Excellent Academician Award (Horticulture) 2020 by SIESRP; Best Paper Presentation Awards in different International and National Seminars/Conferences including Indian Potato Association Gold Medal (2007) and Best Session Paper Award 2014, Bangkok; Also serving as Councilor of Indian Society of Vegetable Science; Member, Editorial Board, Indian Journal o Horticulture.
Dr Sharma has contributed
significantly in vegetables improvement. Developed 15 varieties (8 as
developer and 7 as associate) of different vegetables and spice crops (5 in
garden pea; one each in Asparagus bean, edible pod pea, French bean, turmeric,
cucumber and radish; 2 each in chilli and fenugreek). Registered two unique pea
genotypes with NBPGR. Besides, four production technologies developed by him
find place in Package of Practices of Vegetable Crops for HP. Completed 12 externally
funded projects as PI worth Rs. 5crores and nine as Co-PI; Presently he is handling five projects
including World Bank Funded project under CAAST, NAHEP. Published more than 120
research/review articles in journals of international/national repute, 14 book
chapters, 9 books/practical manuals and many extension articles. Guided 20
M.Sc. and five Ph. D. students.
The Indian
Society of Genetics & Plant Breeding feels proud to bestow Dr. Akhilesh
Sharma the Fellowship of the Society for his contributions in Genetics and
Breeding of Crops.
