Dr. Sharma was born on July 01, 1958 in a village near Meerut, UP. He did his graduation and post graduation from the then Meerut University, Meerut, UP. He did his Ph.D. from Division of Genetics, IARI, New Delhi in 1998.
He joined IARI as Senior Research Fellow at Division of Mycology and Plant Pathology, and subsequently worked as Technical Assistant. He joined ARS as a Scientist, Plant Breeding in the year 1989. As a scientist, he worked at National Bureau of Plant Genetics Resources (NBPGR) and IARI, New Delhi. At NBPGR, he was involved in the characterisation and Evaluation of germplasm of wheat, maize, barely and vegetable crops. Trait specific germplasm in these crops have been identified and supplied to the National Crop Improvement Programme. Unique and trait specific germplasm of maize were collected such as, Sikkim primitive and water stagnation tolerant land races from Behraich (UP). At IARI, working as a cotton breeder, high strength lines have been
identified and got registered with NBPGR. Working as Incharge of Centre for Agriculture Technology Assessment and Transfer (CATAT), IARI, a very ambitious transfer of technology programme encompassing different models and approaches with a horde of technologies developed by IARI has been efficiently and successfully implemented. Presently he is working for breeding wheat varieties, specially for timely sown irrigated conditions. He was elected fellow of Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding in 1999.
