Professor Bharat Chandra Saha was born on 17
January 1954 at Balia, (P. S. Sagardighi), a small village in
the district of Murshidabad in West Bengal. He did his early schooling at Nawab
Bahadur’s Institution at Lalbagh and passed Higher Secondary Examination in
1970. After securing his graduate degree with Honours in agriculture from
Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Mohanpur, West Bengal he went to Indian
Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi and completed his Masters
(1977) and Ph.D. programmes from the division of Genetics in the year 1981. He
worked there as a Research Fellow for some time and later Joined as a Junior
Scientist-cum-Assistant Professor in the
department of Plant Breeding & Genetics at Bihar Agricultural
College, Sabour an affiliated college of
Rajendra Agricultural University, Bihar.
From there he went to Tirhut College of Agriculture, Dholi, Muzaffarpur as
Senior Scientist-cum-Associate Professor and was looking after the small
millets breeding programme and worked there up to May,1994.There after he was
selected as Chief Project Scientist of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Darjeeling
(located at Kalimpong) and continued there up to 30th June,1994. He
was then selected as the Professor & Head, department of Genetics &
Plant Breeding at Uttar Banga Krishi Viswa Vidyalaya, Pundibari, Cooch Behar,
West Bengal and worked there up to
31.01.2014. During his tenure as Professor and Head of the department he
discharged the duties of Registrar, Director Research, Director of Extension
Education and Director Students’ Welfare of the university from time to time.
He then moved to Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour as Director Resident
Instruction –cum-Dean Post Graduate Studies in February, 2014, after formal
retirement from UBKV.. He continued there up to January, 2019. From there he
was selected as the Dean, Agriculture, Rural and Tribal Development at Rama
Krishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute, Morabadi,
Ranchi and continued up to 31st January, 2021. There after he was
selected as Professor (Agriculture) at The Neotia University, Sarisha campus,
South 24 Parganas and is continuing there. He has been the recipients of the
Yugoslav Government Fellowship, Indian National Science Academy Bilateral
Exchange Programme with China and many others. He attended more than forty
National and International Conferences and chaired many technical sessions. He
has more than hundred research publications in different national and international
journals, He has been the Fellow of the Society since 1994. He has visited many countries like
Yugoslavia, Portugal, Spain, United Kingdom, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. He released one variety of turmeric (Uttar Rupanjana) and one variety of ginger
(Mohini) during his tenure at Uttat Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya.
