Born on March 24, 1966, Dr Dharam Pal obtained his Ph D in Plant Breeding from the Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University (HPAU), Palampur in 1993. He started his professional career as Assistant Professor (Genetics/Plant Breeding)) with Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture & Forestry, Solan (HP) in 1993. He joined as Senior Scientist (Plant Breeding) at ICAR-IARI Regional Station, Shimla and currently working as Principal Scientist (Plant Breeding) since Jan., 2011. Dr. Dharam Pal has been involved in developing and release of 28 wheat and barley varieties for commercial cultivation. He has registered 9 genetic stocks in wheat and barley for rust resistance and biscuit quality. He has pyramided rust resistance genes Lr19/Sr25 and Yr15 in popular wheat varieties HS240, HS295. He was involved in sequencing of 100-106Mb genome of Puccinia triticina pathotypes 77 and 106 with the presence of 27678 and 26384 genes and 70-80 Mb genome of yellow rust of wheat. He was associated in two DBT funded and one DST funded projects, respectively. His current focus is on Genetic improvement of wheat and barley for productivity and rust resistance.

Dr Dharam Pal has published 105 manuscripts of which 35 research papers were published in different reputed National and International NAAS rated journals. As per Google Scholar Citation, research articles have been cited more than 690 times with h-index (13) and i10-index (16). He was a visiting scientist to CIMMYT, Mexico in 2011. He has been elected as SAWR Fellow (Wheat Improvement) and also recipient of Nanaji Deshmukh ICAR Award for Outstanding Interdisciplinary Team as an associate. He has been elected fellow of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, New Delhi in the year 2020.
