Born at Udham Singh Nagar, Uttrakhand, India on November 1, 1963, Dr SK Luthra, had his high school and Intermediate education from Drummond Government Inter College, Pilibhit, UP (1977 to 1981); He has completed his B.Sc. (Ag.& AH) in 1984 from CSA, Kanpur; M. Sc. (Ag.) in 1986), M. Phil. (Ag.) in 1987) in Agricultural Botany and Ph. D. in genetics and Plant Breeding in 2002from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, UP, India.

Dr. SK Luthra started his professional career in 1989 as a Scientist at NAARM, Hyderabad; Scientist (1990)at Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatoor, Tamilnadu; Scientist (1990), Senior Scientist (2002) and Principal Scientist (2009 onwards) at ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute, Regional Station, Modipuram, Meerut, UP, India. He is presently principal investigator of programme “Breeding trait specific varieties for productivity, quality and resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses” with a mission to meet the varietal requirement of hills, sub-tropical plains and plateau region of the country. Successfully completed 14 research projects and 4 externally funded projects.

Dr. SK Luthra was recipient several awards and honours which includesCPRI best worker award 2015 (scientific category), Dr S Ramanujam award (2012-2015), Aryabhata Scientist Award (2020-21), Jagdish Chandra Basu Scientist Award (2021-22); Best Paper Award (2018), Best Poster Awards (2008, 2013) and Best Oral Award (2020); Fellow of the Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Indian Potato Association and Horticulture Society of India.

Dr. SK Luthra made a significant contribution in crop breeding and genetics. He has developed 18 improved potato varieties namely Kufri Anand, Kufri Arun, Kufri Sadabahar, Kufri Garima, Kufri Mohan, Kufri Ganga, Kufri Neelkanth, Kufri Lima, Kufri Manik, Kyfri FryoM, Kufri Thar-2, Kufri Sangam, Kufri Kiran, Kufri Lohit, Kufri Uday, Kufri Chipsona-5, Kufri Bhaskar and Kufri Dakshfor cultivation in the country. He has developed and introduced 90 advanced potato clones in AICRP for multi-location testing. He has registered 21 elite genetic stock’s namely SS2040, SS1725-22, P-7, SS1735-02, SS1652-09, Crd-6, MS/6-1947, MS/8-1565, MP/6-39, MSH/14-113, MSH/14-129, MCD24, MSH/14-7, CPH62, PNT43, STO61, MSH/17-16, NUE/15-8, MSP/15-26, MSP/15-51 and NUE/15-23 with NBPGR.

Dr. SK Luthra has published 276 national/international publications including 114 research papers (80 peer reviewed), 17 book chapters, 34 popular articles, 10 technical bulletins, 5 E publications, 5 book/annual reports, 76 abstracts and 15 training notes. The technical bulletin on “Potato Breeding in India” is quite popular among the breeders. He has attended 14 trainings, 195 workshop/symposia/meeting/farmer fairs etc. and delivered 105 lectures in seminars, workshops, scientific meetings, trainings, farmer fairs, radio and television shows on potatoes. He has also been associated with organization of workshop, seminars, farmer fair and training programmes on 42 occasions as chairman, co-chairman, coordinator and member of the team.
