Born at Nayagarh, Odisha, India on the 1st July, 1962, Dr. P. N. Jagadev, had his school education from Brajendra High School, Nayagarh (1973-1977) and Intermediate  Science from S.C.S. College, Puri (1977-1979); completed his B.Sc.(Ag.) in 1984 and M.Sc.(Ag.) in Plant Breeding and Genetics in 1986 from the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneswar and thereafter, Ph.D. in Genetics and Plant Breeding from Govind Ballav Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar in 1999 and Post-Doctoral Training on Molecular Biology from Washington University, St. Louis, USA in 2004.

Dr. Jagadev started his professional career in the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology as an Assistant Professor (1987-1999), Associate Professor (1999-2007),  Professor (2007-2022), Head of the Department of Bioinformatics (2005-2009), Dean of Research (2015-2018), Dean of Extension Education (2016-2017) and superannuated in 2022. He travelled many countries like USA, Australia, South Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand and Kenya on different research and development assignments.

He was recipient of several honours and awards, which include Krutti Krushi Vaigyanik Samman  (2015) and Best Agricultural Scientist Award (2017) from the Government of Odisha, Krushi Ratna Award (2015) from Krushak Sambad Weekly, Cuttack, Best Director Award (2017) from Education Expo TV, Mumbai,  Lifetime Achievement Award (2019) and Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Scientist Award (2020) from the Society of Tropical Agriculture, New Delhi.

He made a significant contribution in crop breeding and genetics by developing 12 crop varieties including state’s first mesta variety ‘Shanti’, first maize hybrid ‘Kalingaraj’, rice (3), sugarcane (1), groundnut (1), sesame (1), cotton (1), jute (1), ginger (1) and turmeric (1); published 108 research papers in various peer reviewed journals of national/international repute, authored/edited 34 books/manuals, guided 53 post-graduate, four Ph.D. and one PDF students as major advisor and 130 PG/PhD students as member in advisory committees exemplifying his academic acumen.

The Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding feels proud to bestow on Dr. P. N. Jagadev, the fellowship of the society for his outstanding contribution in the field of Plant Breeding and Genetics.
