Born at Allahabad, U.P., India on 14th March 1965. Educated at Kendriya Vidyalaya School, Kolkata, 1969-73; Modern Senior Secondary School, Patiala 1978-79; B.Sc. (Medical), Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana 1981-83; M.Sc. and Ph.D Genetics. 1983 -1989 PAU, Ludhiana.
