Born on 18 July 1968 in a farming family at Kollapur, Telangana State, Dr. Balram Marathi obtained his Ph D in Genetics from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi in 2008.  He started his professional career as Research Associate with Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University (1991-94); Agricultural Officer (1994-99). Since 1999, he has been working with Professor Jayashankar Telangana State University (PJTSAU) in various positions. From 2012- 2014, Dr Marathi worked with the International Rice Research Institute, Philippines as Post-Doctoral Researcher. Dr Marathi became Head, Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Agricultural College, Jagtial in February 2019 and is currently working as Associate Dean, Agricultural College, Warangal since December, 2020. 

Dr. Marathi has involved in development of a medium staple cotton hybrid LAHH-4, and four rice varieties viz. Sheetal (WGL283); Siddhi (WGL44); Somnath (WGL347) and Telangana Vari-1 (WGL739) and K6 groundnut variety resistant to late leaf spot, rust and high oleic acid oil content through marker assisted backcross breeding. Dr. Marathi is having collaborative research projects with institutes like IIT Hyderabad, IIT Bombay, University of Tokyo etc. Currently, Dr Marathi is Principal Investigator of research projects in the advanced areas like high-throughput field phenotyping by drone imaging; high-throughput genotyping i.e., GBS, WGS, RNAseq  and GWAS; Genomic Selection for improvement of aerobic rice, development of Lab-on-Chip platforms of soil moisture and nutrient sensors.

Dr Marathi published 38 research articles in various national and international journals, contributed to 6 book chapters and presented 31 research papers at conferences. He has guided 15 Masters, 7 Doctoral and 1 Post-Doctoral student in departments of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Genetics and Plant Breeding, Entomology, Pathology, and Horticulture.

Dr Marathi received Assam Government Gold Medal 2009; Jawaharlal Nehru award 2010; International Fellowship for Post-Doctoral Research 2012-14; Telangana State Govt. Best Teacher Award 2020. Dr. Marathi is an inventor in patents filed in 9 countries for developing rice lines with high outcrossing and a patent in India for developing methodology for differentiating filled and unfilled grains in rice through thermal imaging.
