Born on May 21, 1966, Dr (Mrs) S. Alarmelu obtained her Ph D in Population Improvement in Sesame (Sesamum indicum L) from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore in 1993. She started her professional career as Scientist (Plant Breeding) with ICAR - Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore (TN) in 1993. Since 1993, she has been working with ICAR-SBI in various positions.

Dr. S. Alarmelu has developed eleven sugarcane varieties viz., Co 94008, Co 99004, Co 2001-13, Co 2001-15, Co 0212, Co 0218, Co 0403, Co 09004, Co 10026, Co 11015 and Co 12009 for Peninsular zone of the country, of which seven varieties are drought tolerant, one short duration and one saline tolerant.  She has developed more than 100 Co canes and registered five genetic stocks. Her current focus is breeding and development of varieties for tropical region of the country, introgression breeding utilizing improved S. officinarum, S.robustum and S.spontaneum and exploitation of trait specific genetic stocks in breeding programmes. Dr. S. Alarmelu is Principal Investigator of two research projects aimed at evaluation of multitrait genetic stock under drought and DUS testing of sugarcane varieties of Tropical region. Contributed in the development of E ganna, Mobile app in English and Tamil which can be used as a ready reckoner for sugarcane growers.

Dr Alarmelu has published 34 research papers, authored 5 books, 40 chapters in Manuals and 40 Abstracts in symposium/ seminars. Dr  Alarmelu has delivered seven invited lectures on sugarcane breeding and improvement at various national and international fora.

The Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding feels proud to bestow on Dr (Mrs) S. Alarmelu Fellowship of the Society for her outstanding contributions in sugarcane breeding.
