Born at Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India on the 21st
May, 1965, Dr. S. Geetha, had her school education from Sri Ramakrishna Mutt
Vivekananda Centenary Girls’ High School, Chennai (1976 to 1980) and Bentinck
Higher Secondary School, Chennai (1980 -1982); She has completed her B.Sc.
(Ag.) in 1986, M. Sc. (Ag.) in 1988) in Plant Breeding and Genetics and Ph. D.
in Plant Breeding and Genetics in 1996 from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University,
Tamil Nadu, India
Dr.
S. Geetha started her professional career in 1989 as a junior rice breeder at
Tamil Nadu Rice Research Institute Aduthurai; Sugarcane breeder at Sugarcane
Research Station, Sirugamani, (1994-2003); Rice breeder at Anbil Dharmalingam
Agrl. College and Res. Inst Trichy in two spells in 2003 to 2010 and 2013 to
2017 respectively; worked in AICRP- MULLaRP, NPRC, Vamban; Professor and Head,
NPRC, Vamban (2010-2013); Professor and Head, KVK, Vamban(2011-2012); Project
Director for Farm Women Knowledge Centre, ADAC&RI, Trichy(2016-2017); Dean Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Agriculture
College (Affiliated to TNAU), (2017 -2019); Director for Centre for Plant
Breeding and Genetics, TNAU (2019 to 2022) and continue to work as Professor
and Head, Department of Pulses, TNAU, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Successfully completed 15 University
research projects and 10 externally funded projects.
She was recipient several awards and honours
which include ICAR junior fellowship (1986 – 1988); Ganga Naidu Medal (2006)
for the best Sugarcane Research by MASU; N. Gopalakrishna Medal (1988) by
AC&RI, Madurai; MASU Award for the best PG student (1988); Dr. Ramaiah
Award for the best Ph. D. Student (1996); M. S. Swaminathan Award for the best
Ph. D. thesis (1996); Second prize in “Doubling Farmers’ Income scheme” of TNAU
from 2019-2021
Dr.
S Geetha made a significant contribution in crop breeding and genetics She has
developed 15
crop varieties including rice (5),
sugarcane (3), black gram (5), cowpea (1) and groundnut (1); published 70 research articles in various peer reviewed journals,
authoring five books,
guided 15 post graduate students
