Dr.
Vignesh Muthusamy did his PhD in the year 2012 from Indian Agricultural Research
Institute (IARI), New Delhi. Presently, he is Scientist (Senior Scale) at Maize
Genetics Unit, Division of Genetics, ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute,
New Delhi.
Dr.
Muthusamy has significantly contributed in the field of Genetics and Plant Breeding; and is amongst the pioneer
researchers to use the genomic tools for improving nutritional quality and
specialty traits in maize. He has integrated both conventional and molecular
breeding in development of ten biofortified maize hybrids with multi-nutrients
like provitamin-A, lysine and tryptophan. The biofortified hybrids will prove
to be landmark in alleviating malnutrition. He has also contributed notably in
development of two shrunken-2 based sweet corn hybrids and one male sterile based baby corn
hybrid. His research efforts on basic genetic studies of various nutritional
quality and specialty corn traits have led to the development of several novel
maize genetic resources with combination of different nutritional quality and
specialty traits; and the outcome is very well evident from over 82 high impact
research publications and high citation index.
Dr.
Muthusamy has received many prestigious awards like 2018-Maize-Asia Youth
Innovators Award
of CIMMYT, Fellow of ISGPB, Pran Vohra Award of ISCA,
Jawaharlal Nehru Award for Outstanding Doctoral Thesis of ICAR, Merit Medal for
Ph D of IARI and NR Bhat Memorial Award for best Ph D paper of ISGPB. He is
handling several externally funded projects sponsored by DBT, DST and ICAR. He
is also actively contributing in PG teaching and has guided five M.Sc. students
and guiding one M.Sc. And five PhD students. He is also contributing as a
reviewer in journal of international repute like Critical Reviews in Food
Science and Nutrition, Food Chemistry, Journal of Cereal Science, Frontiers in Plant
Science, Frontiers in Genetics, Gene, Journal of Food Biochemistry, Australian
Plant Pathology, Physiology and Molecular Biology of Plants, Indian Journal of
Genetics and Plant Breeding etc.
