Dr. Joginder Singh Memorial Award (Biennial), 2017

Dr. Firoz Hossain obtained his PhD in the year 2005 from ICARIndian Agricultural Research Institute, Pusa campus, New Delhi. Presently, he is working as Senior Scientist, Division of Genetics, ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi.

Dr. Hossain has significantly contributed in the field of Plant Sciences especially in Genetics and Plant Breeding. His research work is a perfect amalgamation on use of conventional and molecular approaches in crop improvement His research efforts led to the development of country's first provitamin A rich maize hybrid 'Pusa Vivek QPM9 Improved' using marker-assisted selection. Besides, he has also developed three quality protein maize (QPM) hybrids viz. 'Pusa HM4 Improved', 'Pusa HM8 Improved' and 'Pusa HM9 Improved' that contain high lysine and tryptophan. Dr. Hossain also developed several novel maize genetic resources rich in diverse nutritional quality traits. He has also developed agronomically promising super sweet corn genotypes.

Dr. Hossain received many prestigious awards from different societies and scientific organisations. As Principal Investigator he has handled many network projects funded by DBT, GoI and ICAR-CRP for development of nutritionally rich maize genotypes. He is an active and accomplished teacher in the Division of Genetics and has guided 3 M.Sc. and 2 Ph.D., students. He has so far published more than 60 research papers in reputed national and international journals besides other publications.

Considering all the achievements and contributions in the field of Maize Genetics and Breeding. The BOARD OF AWARDS of the Society has recommended his name for the ISGPB JOGINDER SINGH MEMORIALAWARD 2017, as such the Society confers him the th same day today on the 5 October, 2017.
