WHEAT breeding on scientific lines commenced in India during the first decade
of the present century. During the initial phase of the breeding work, in
which major emphasis was laid on adaptability, yielding ability and grain quality,
varieties were developed through selection in naturally-varying populations and
in segregating generations of intervarietal hybrids.
