STUDIES ON HYBRID VIGOUR IN WHEAT

Published on

EXPLOITATION of hybrid vigour in many cross-pollinated crops like maize and baj~a
has now been fully developed and scientifically organised, with the result that it is
now feasible to produce hybrid seed for distribution on commercial scale. In selfpollinated crops the method has still got some limitations. Even in horticultural
plants like tomato, brinjal and
bhindi, where large number of seeds can be obtained
in one pollination, hybrid seed production is still to be accepted as a commercial
proposition. In such crops, as well as in a few other economic crops like wheat and
barley where self-pollination and floral structure are still a handicap for the utilization of hybrid vigour, information obtained from certain basic studies has,
however, pointed towards some methods by which these bottlenecks can be overcome
(Pal and Sikka, 1956).
