SOURCES OF RESISTANCE TO LEAF-RUST OF WHEAT IN ALIEN GENERA AND THEIR UTILIZATION

Published on

LEAF rust of wheat (Puccinia recondita Rob. ex Desm.) is of common occurrence
in the northern wheat belt comprising the states of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and
Bihar. Although the disease has been considered as one of the limiting factors
in successful wheat production by several workers (Hayes, Aamodt and Stevenson,
]927; Mains, ]930; Johnston, ]93]; Johnston and MiJler, ]934) the year to
year loss caused by
it is not fully recognized. According to Anderson (1961),
leaf rust must be considered a major disease of wheat since the overall effect of
the disease on wheat yields is quite comparable to the one caused by stem rust
if the yearly erosion of yield together with the possibility of such disastrous
epiphytotics as occurrred in 1938 in U.S.A. are taken into account.
