SOME NEW VARIETIES OF TRITICUM SPHAEROCOCCUM Perc.

Published on

As stated by the author (Singh, 1946), Indian" Dwarf" wheats were classed as
compactum wheats by Howard and Howard (1909, 1910). But later, from his observations at Reading in England on Indian compactum wheats of Howard and Howard,
grown side by side with numerous forms of
T. compactum from other parts of the world,
Percival (1921), considered that the dense-eared Indian" Dwarf" wheats described
by Howard and Howard (1909, 1910) under the name of
T. compactum Host. were
quite different from wheats known as
T. compactum elsewhere, and coined a new specific
term for such Indian wheats, namely,
sphaerococcum. Later on, Vavilov (1923)
concurred with Percival's view. Thus, Indian" Dwarf" wheats are now known
as
Triticum sphaerococcum Perc.
