THE newness of plant genetics may be judged by the fact that the
present writer was born in the year that l\fon<lel died, i.e. 1884. As every
one knows, it was not till l 900 that the rediscovery of Mendel's paper,
till then buried in the archives of a provincial Natural History Society,
proyided the stimulus for the develppment of what has now become a
separate branch of science.
