RADIATION INDUCED GENETIC AND PHYSIOLOGICAL COLOUR CHANGES IN JUTE

PLANTS grown in the first generation after treatment with X-, (3- and y-rays have often
been observed to manifest changes in colour of different parts. In most cases, these
changes affect a few leaves in the seedling stage but in some cases, although rarely,
the colour of the entire plant is known to change into some known or some unknown
pigmentation in the species. The most common morphological manifestation of radiation induced change in colour is the irregular distribution of chlorophyll in some leaves
giving a mosaic appearance like
striata chimaeras in cereals. The present paper deals
with the colour changes in jute induced by X-rays and beta rays from p32
 and S35.
