PLANT TYPE IN BENGAL GRAM

IN the continuous search for higher agricultural yields, considerable emphasis
has come to be placed on the effective absorption and utilization of sunlight by
plant populations throughout the growing period. The importance of plant
type in such effective utilization of solar energy has recently been stressed,
particularly in rice (Jennings, 1964), wheat (Asana, 1965), maize (Williams,
Loomis and Lepley, 1965), etc. Little information of this type is, however,
available regarding pulse crops. In our programme of improvement of pulse
crops, therefore, it was felt desirable to collect some basic information on the
types of plant habit met with; the preliminary information obtained on bengal
gram
(Cicer anetinurn L.), the major pulse crop of India, is presented below.
