NITROUS acid causes inactivation and mutations in tobacco mosaic virus
(Schuster, Gierer and Mundry, 1960), bacteriophages (Vielmetter and Schuster,
1960; Benzer, 1961) and bacteria (Kaudewitz, 1960). It produces mutants
in tobacco mosaic virus by chemical alteration of TMV ribonucleic acid, as
demonstrated by Schuster and Schramm (1958). In vitro, it deaminates the
purine and pyrimidine bases of RNA (Schuster et al., 1960) and DNA (Schuster,
1960).
