IN hybrid breeding programmes, diversity of parents is always emphasised.
The more diverse the parents, within a reasonable range, the more the chances
of improving the
character in view. The progenies derived from a set of diverse
crosses
are expected to exhibit similarly a broad spectrum of variability. In
self-fertilizing crops, the within-family variance is expected to be lower than
the variances due to
families and progenies in families. Breeders apply directional selection pressure while isolating the desirable progenies in subsequent
segregating generations
and thus the above statement may not hold true. It will
