Tmi: genus Nicotiana, which consists of over 70 species and includes our
cultivated tobacco, has been a favourite gen.us for hybri~isation since the
time ·of Kolreuter (quoted by East, 1928) whose investigation of the croBB
N. '[!anicul,ata x N. rustica is the first genetical researchonrecord. Laterwork .
by several authors notable among whom are Clausen and Goodspeed (1925),
Clausen (1928), Christoff (1928}, East (1928), Kostoff (1930, 1938), McCray
(1932), Elvers (1934), Goodspeed (1934) and Muntzing (1935) comprised
the study of many interspecifi.c cross~combinations which contributed a.
great deal to our understanding of the phylesis in the genus. The work of
Ko~toff (193.6) and Greenleaf (1941 a, b) has actually demonstrated the
origin of our'cultivated tobacco species, N. Tabacum and N. rostica.
