INHERITANCE STUDIES IN SORGHUM

Published on

Sundhia jowar (Sorghum vulgare Pers.), is a forage type of sorghum characterised
by reddish purple glumes and white grains, cultivated extensively in middle and
north Gujarat. Though considerable information regarding the genetic factors involved
in glume and grain colour in Sorghum has been obtained in India (Richharia, 1957)
as well as abroad (Vinall and Corn, 1921; Conner and Karper, 1923; Sielinger, 1924,
1933; Swanson, 1928; Stephens, 1947) little is known regarding the situation in the
Sundhia variety. It was, therefore, thought worthwhile to undertake a study on the
mode of inheritance of glume and grain colour in this
jowar type.
