CYTOLOGICAL studies have shown the two species of Luffa, L. acutangula Roxb.
and L. cylindrica (L.) to be closely related and only a few structural changes
are thought to have played significant role in species differentiation (Singh,
1947; Pathak and Singh, 1949 and Menzes, 1955). Information on the
inheritance of characters has been too meagre to enable the breeder to plan
out an improvement programme. Choudhury and Thakur (1965) discussed the
inheritance of sex-forms; in this paper, some other plant characters are dealt with.
