INHERITANCE OF HAIRINESS OF FERTILE GLUMES IN RICE

Published on

THE cultivated types of rice show considerable variation in the nature of hairiness on
the lemma and palea (fertile glumes or glumes) as in any other character. Some of
these varieties possess glabrous fertile glumes, while a great majority of them have
fertile glumes with short and stiff hairs, distributed along the surface. The size and
distribution of hairs show a certain degree of variation but the normal pattern of
hairiness is constant for a particular variety. This character has also been utilized in
the taxonomic classification of the genus
0lyza.
