INHERITANCE OF FIELD RESISTANCE TO BROWN RUST, SPIKELET STERILITY AND PIGMENTATION IN DURUM WHEAT

IN an earlier communication, Rao, Mathur, Ahire and Narula (1963) reported the
mode of inheritance of yellow rust resistance and certain other characters in crosses of an
Ethiopian wheat variety, St. 464, with some of the
durum wheats of Madhya Pradesh.
This variety has been observed to exhibit considerable field resistance to brown rust
as well and in the present paper, the breeding behaviour for brown rust resistance and
other characters like spikelet sterility and pigmentation are reported. No similar work
on
durum wheats, except in an interspecific cross involving Gaza (durum) as a resistant
source and N. P. 710 and N. P. 718 (both
vulgare) as moderately susceptible parents
(Murty and Lakhani, 1958), has been done in this country, presumably because brown
rust has never been a limiting factor in Madhya Pradesh and other states where this
species is predominantly grown.
