GENETICAL studies in wheat carried out at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute,
have elucidated the pattern of inheritance of the rust resistance carried by a number
of donor parents that are being used in the breeding programmes in India (Pal, 1951;
Sen and Joshi, 1955; Pal, Sikka and Rao, 1956; Sikka and Rao, 1957, 1958; Prasad
and Rao, 1960; Sikka et al. 1960). The results of the studies of the inheritance of field
resistance'to brown rust of the varieties H 167 : 7-4-4-8 (developed at the LA.R.I.
from the cross Rionegro X N. P. 760) Rionegro, Frondoso and Yaqui 53 in crosses
with the susceptible varieties, viz., N. P. 824, Ridley and N. P. 770 are presented
here. Certain other characters like grass-clumps, auricle colour, early growth-habit,
and glume colour were also studied.
