THE study of the inheritance of plant characters is invaluable in guiding a plant
breeding programme. The plant breeder is conscious that selective capacity of his
material depends upon the amount of heritable variability present. It is also necessary
to understand the manner in which the variability functions in order to be able to estimate it and use it in breeding.
At present, the wheat varieties which are grown in Western Oregon (U.S.A.),
are generally medium to late in maturity. It is highly desirable to produce early
varieties suited to Oregon conditions. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to
determine the mode of inheritance, and to evaluate the genetic varIation expressed in
the F 2 and F3 generations of three wheat crosses, in respect of date of heading, which
might be of value for selection purposes.
