HYBRID VIGOUR IN INDIAN SQUASH

Published on

THE work of Singh (1949) with Cucurbita maxima revealed heterosis particularly in
growth habit, quality and yield. In studies on bittergourd, Pal and Singh (1946)
noted that most of the hybrids produced a larger number of male and female flowers,
were early in flowering and gave higher yields than the parents. Yangisawa and
Mitunori (1951) crossed Japanese commercial varieties of watermelons and found
F[ hybrids to be more sweet, superior in quality, early in maturity, resistant to diseases,
with firmer flesh and improved transportation and storage quality as compared to
the parents.
