PEARL millet (Pennisetum typhoides S. and H.) like other cross-pollinated crops,
exhibits depression in vigour during selfing and increase in vigour on crossing.
The phenomenon of inbreeding depression in this crop has been studied by
earlier workers (Kadam, Patil and Kulkarni, 1940 and Burton, 1948) and
the manifestation of heterosis in different economic traits has been reported by
Rao, Nambiar and Krishnamurthy (1949), Burton (1951 and 1959) and
Ahluwalia and Patnaik (1963).
