INTEREST ln the origin and relationship of the highly fertile and the only known tetraploid species of Phase0lus (Dana, 1964) was stimulated by the possibility of its utility in breeding of tropical Phaseolus species. Intensive pachytene studies were undertaken on this species and the results with special reference to its allotetraploid nature and origin are being reported elsewhere (Krishnan and De, in press). Concurrently, hybridization of this species with the two econ.omically important diploid species, Phaseolus aureus and P. mungo, were undertaken to elucidate the genomic homology, if any.
