GENOTYPIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS ON CYTOPLASMIC MALE STERILITY

IN India, hybrid seed production of maize is being done by mechanically
detasseling the plants of the seed parent using human labow', The procedure
is not only time consuming and expensive but sometimes carelessness and
negligence in the removal of the tassels in time result in the poor quality of the
double cross seed. The use of cytoplasmic male~sterility in the production of
hybrid maize seed ensures a built in control over such lapses and reduces the cost
of production of the hybrid seed.
