GENETIC ANALYSIS OF MATURE PLANT RESISTANCE OF LECHTALER AND GOLD BARLEYS TO INDIAN RACES OF LEAF RUST

Published on

LEAF rust of barley, caused by Puccinia hordei Otth., though reported from India
as early as 1918 by Butler, was considered rather rare and unimportant in causing
crop loss. In recent years, however, this rust has been found to be widely distributed,
particularly in the northern and the eastern plains, where approximately 92 per cent.
of the total acreage under this crop lies. Joshi
et al. (1959) and Vasudeva, Joshi and
Sreekantiah (1960) isolated two races and a biotype, viz., HI, HI-A and H" from
limited samples collected from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madras States, which
are seemingly different from the 52 races described by Levine and Cherewick (1952);
race HI and its biotype appear to be close to race 2
