STUDIES on the inheritance of quantitative characters in cauliflower are inadequate. Nieuwhof and Garretsen (1961) studied the solidity of the curd and
found that it was polygenically inherited. Recently, Watts (1964, 1965a, b)
reported similar findings with regard to curd maturity. Jones (1932), Belorossova
(1935), Horne (1948), Svensson (1954) and Weiring (1961) reported usefulness
of the F, hybrids in respect of earliness of maturity and compactness and whiteness ofcurd with good keeping quality. Although Haigh (1962) did not find
pronounced heterosis in this crop, Watts (1965b) reported heterosis manifested
as earliness of maturity and increased curd size. The present investigation
aimed at studying these two aspects in medium and late maturing varieties of
cauliflower.
