INBRED lines of maize are developed by successive generations of selfing and
are selected for their productivity per se, resistance to diseases and pests,
maturity and other desirable agronomic traits. Next, the Jines are evaluated
for their general and specific combining ability and the elite lines are utilized
for the production of double cross hybrids. This procedure of evolving elite
inbred lines is complicated and time consuming.
