ONE of the serious factors interfering with crop production is the occurrence of
diseases and pests. They occur every year with varying intensities all over the
world causing tremendous losses to crops, and misery to millions ofpeople. The
problem is of particular significance in the present day world, where there is an
evergrowing demand for more, if not better, food. History recorded several
famines caused by plant diseases which would have occurred even in the present
day world but for the quick communications and international cooperation
that occur now.
