CONSISTENCY OF KARYOTYPES AND CLASSIFICATION AND IDENTIFICATION OF CHROMOSOMES IN THE GENUS PINUS

THE karyotype in the genus Pinus has been reported by Sax and Sax (1933),
Mehra and Khoshoo (1956), Aass (1957), Vidakovic (1958), Saylor (1961),
Natarajan, Ohba and Simak (1961) and Vim (1963), who found the diploid
complement to consist of
24 chromosomes. In these studies the chromosomes
were grossly grouped into a median and a submedian class but the quantitative
characterization of individual chromosomes with data indicating the variation in
the parameters described has not been attempted. Karyotypes have been
reported which indicate interspecific variation and intraspecific inconsistency
for the chromosomes with secondary constriction. In the present study with two
species of
Pinus, evidence was obtained for a consistency in chromosome
parameters both within and between species.
