The so`ciety was founded 60 years ago and has been keeping itself abreast with the latest research in the area of Genetics and Plant Breeding by encouraging active integration among its members through topical seminar/symposia to bring about the awareness among its members and the public at large.
The Indian Journal of Genetics and Plant Breeding is a periodical for the publication of records of original research in all branches of genetics, plant breeding and cytology, including human genetics, molecular biology and biotechnology, and other cognate sciences of sufficient importance and of such a character as to be of primary interest to the geneticist and plant breeders.
Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding, the oldest and most prestigious registered society of practicising Geneticists and Plant Breeders from public and private institutions and the students pursuing Genetics and Plant Breeding disciplines, has vital role to play in fostering the progress of Science of Genetics and Plant Breeding in the country.The Society has continually expanded and has now on its roll, more then 2000 members from India n\and abroad which include more than 900 Life Members. The Society has 45 foreign members and 14 Honorary Fellows. The list of its Honorary Fellows includes some of the most renowned Geneticists and Plant Breeders of the twentieth century

The formation of the Indian society of Genetics and Plant Breeding at New Delhi in January 1942 has been quickly followed by the publication of the Indian Journal of Genetics and Plant Breeding. The Journal is edited by Dr. B.P. Pal, Imperial Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, on behalf of the executive council of the Society. This welcome addition to genetical publications provides a valuable outlet and source of reference for the ever-increasing work of the research institutes of India.
