THE SOMATIC CHROMOSOMES AND MEIOSIS IN CAPSICUM

Published on

ACCORDING to Darlington (1945), chromosome numbers in CajJsicum are known in
three species namely C.
annuum, C. baccatum and C. jrutescens but detailed cytological
studies have been confined only to C.
annum. Besides diploids (2n=24) in the first two
species, triploid and tetraploid forms are reported in the first and haploid and tetraploid
in the second respectively. The counts made by Kostov (as quoted by Tischler 1927),
who reports six as the haploid number in four varieties of C.
annuum namely' chilense',
, nigrum " 'microcarpum' and' grossum " are altogether different. This, however,
has been contradicted by others who all have found n= 12 (Huskins and
La Cour
1930, Dixit 1931).
