THE ORIGIN OF MAIZE

Published on

VARIOUS theories have been proposed to account for the origin of maize, and until
very recently there has been a conspicuous lack of agreement among students of the
problem concerning either the place of origin, the kind of wild grass from which it
came, or the manner in which it evolved into the highly specialized and very productive food plant which 'it is today. The lack of agreement originated at a time when
very little was known about the wild relatives of maize, or its history as a cultivated
plant.
