NUMEROUS investigations carried out during the last few years in the Soviet Union
have resulted in a somewhat better understanding of the fertilization process in plants.
However, in spite of the considerable data available on the effect of different types of
pollination, such as free or controlled pollination, use of pollen mixtures or alien pollen
etc., on the inheritance of characters, many aspects of the fertilization process are still
imperfectly understood. It is needless to point out that the greater our understanding
of the factors controlling inheritance of characters after hybridization, the greater will
be the success attending our efforts to breed improved varieties of cultivated plants.
