STUDIES ON INDUCED POLYPLOIDS IN FORAGE CROPS II. COLCHICINE TREATMENT METHODS FOR BERSEEM AND SENJI

Published on

IN the first paper of this series (Mehta and Swaminathan, 1957), a review was made,
of the work so far done in different countries on breeding polyploid strains of forage
crops. As mentioned in that paper, experiments on the induction of polyploidy
in
berseem (Trifolium alexandrinum) and senji (Melilotus indica) were started at the Indian
Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi in 1954. Since various colchicine treatment techniques have been recommended by different authors for use in forage crops,
an attempt was made to standardise techniques suitable for inducing chromosome
doubling in
berseem and senji. An account of the different treatment methods tried
and the results obtained are given in this paper.
