SOME RESULTS AND PROBLEMS OF THEORETICAL AND APPLIED MUTATION RESEARCH

Published on

SOON after Muller had, more than 30 years ago, provided evidence that ionizing
radiations increase the frequency of mutations, the question arose, to what extent
these new possibilities to increase the variability of organisms could be applied in
breeding work. In the United States of America at first there were no such studies,
especially in consequence of Stadler's pessimistic opinion. Only during the last years
has there been a change, and today mutation experiments are carried out with many
cultivated plants in the United States of America.
