A RECENT list of the genes located on specific chromosomes of bread wheat through
aneuploid analysis compiled by Dr. Rosalind Morris of the University of Nebraska
reveals how great an impact this elegant tool has made in the study of linkage groups
in this hexaploid plant. The aneuploids and substitution lines derived from them
have b~en useful not only in identifying the genes controlling qualitative characters
but also in studying the location, possible number and interaction of genes governing
quantitative expression. Thus, Kuspira and Unrau (1957) found statistically highly
significant modifications of yield, earliness, lodging resistance and height associated
with specific chromosomes of Thatcher, Hope and Timstein substituted for their
respective homologues in lines of Chinese Spring.
