MONOSOMIC ANALYSIS IN BREAD WHEAT II. IDENTIFICATION OF CHROMOSOMES CARRYING GENES FOR AWNING AND GLUME BEAK

Published on

CYTOGENETIC investigations in wheat utilizing the Chinese Spring monosomic lines,
obtained from Dr. E. R. Sears of the United States Department of Agriculture, were
started at this Institute in 1954. Already several genes have been located on specific
chromosomes in the variety Cometa Klein (Sikka
et at. 1956; Singh and Swaminathan,
1959). A chief aim of the work is the identification of chromosomes carrying genes
conferring resistance to the different physiologic strains of the three types of rusts prevalent in this country. For this purpose, crosses were made during 1955-56 between
the Chinese monosomics and the varieties Rio Negro (E. 952), Kenya C. 10854 (E. 220)
and N.P. 790. The present report deals with the location of certain factors controlling
morphological characters like awning and glume beak shape in these varieties.
