INHERITANCE OF SEEDLING REACTION TO PHYSIOLOGIC RACES 40 AND 75 OF STEM RUST IN SOME INTERVARIETAL CROSSES OF TRITICUM AESTIVUM

ALTHOUGH some work has been done on the genetics of field resistance, very little
work appears to have been done in India in the direction offinding out the genetic basis
of seedling resistance or physiologic resistance to individual rans of the three wheat
rusts. Basic information on the genetics of resistance to individual races, the relationship between the genes governing reaction to different races and the nature of genes
carried by different resistant genetic stocks that are being used in breeding programmes,
is a great need of the present day wheat breeding work in India. Sen and Joshi (1955)
studied the inheritance of seedling reaction to race 42 of stem rust while Makhija
(1958, unpublished) studied the same with reference to races 21, 75, biotype l5C and
its colour mutant and 42 B in a number of crosses involving commercial Indian
wheats (susceptible) and fordgn and Indian resistance donors. Athwal (1953,
1955), using some Australian wheat material, studied the inheritance of seedling reaction to certain Indian races of stem rust
