Oryza latifolia Desv. is an American tetraploid species (2n=48) having its
distribution in Central and South America extending from Mexico and West
Indies to Paraguay and Northern Argentina. Oryza australiensis Domin. is
a diploid species (2n=24) endemic to Australia. According to the classification of Tateoka (1963), O. latifolia belongs to the series Latifoliae Tateoka
while O. australiensis belongs to the series Australienses Tateoka. The present
paper reports the results of a cytogenetic study of hybrids between the two
species.
